On August 19, 2018, I committed to a goal.
I committed to getting to the gym as part of my morning routine for 350 out of the next 365 days. As of June 24, 2019, I had 56 days remaining to reach the goal, and about 70 gym sessions to go.
For some, the response would be to give up. For others, giving up isn’t an option.
On a recent 5 AM Call, I discussed how I am going to adjust to make this goal happen.
No Excuses
When we set a long term goal, it’s easy to come up with excuses as to why we won’t meet it. There are a million things that can get in the way of attaining a goal: holidays, family time, sickness, a shift in business….the list goes on.
Instead of entering excuse mode, what else can we do?
We can ADJUST.
Two ways to adjust: adjust the goal or adjust our actions.
When we adjust the goal, we are using those excuses in our reasoning. I could say, I will change my end timeline and get in 350 gym sessions by the end of September because I got sick and spent time enjoying the holidays. But this would mean I came up short on this goal, letting myself, and the people I declared my goal to, down.
Make it Work
There are not enough times where we adjust the ACTIONS instead of the GOAL. I refuse to adjust my timeline. I made this commitment for a reason.
Rather than throwing out the goal or giving myself more time, I am committed to fitting the rest of my gym session into the days I have available. This means doing two sessions a day at the gym. My original goal was to hit the gym 350 times as part of my morning routine. Even though that isn’t going to happen, I can still meet the timeline I set for myself.
At this mid-point of the year, you know what goals you are on pace to reach and what goals are lagging. Now is the time to make adjustments you need in order to accomplish your goals.
If you are not on track to meet a goal, take a look at where you can make changes.
-
Determine the most critical part of the goal for you. Is it the timeline or an end product?
-
Ask yourself what it would take to make that part of your goal happen. What is available to help you reach your timeline or end product?
-
Drop the excuses and take ACTION.
Jimmy Carter said, “We must adjust to changing times and still hold to unchanging principles.”
What principles are you unwilling to change?
